American sports fans are set for a summer packed with action thanks to the resumption of play in all four major sports over the next two months. The NBA is expected to restart at the end of July with the first games expected to tip off on July 30th. Twenty-two of the thirty teams in the league picked up enough wins to qualify for the final tournament. This condensed schedule will begin with eight seeding matches which will decide the final playoff standings, presenting punters with ample opportunity for betting on some high-profile, high-liquidity fixtures. Once the standings have been decided, the first round of the NBA playoffs will commence on August 17th, consisting of the 8 best teams from each conference. Once the field of 16 teams is set, the playoff format will be exactly the same as in any other NBA season, meaning best of seven games and multiple chances to bet on each NBA playoff round.
Los Angeles boasts two of the three favourite teams to clinch the NBA Championship, with the Lakers priced at 3.0 with the bookmakers and 3.75 on the exchanges and the Clippers available at 4.0 to 5.0 in the global betting market. The Milwaukee Bucks are odds-on to represent the Eastern Conference with no betting liquidity provider bigger than 1.85. Various rating systems are divided over the favourites for the championship with simple ELO systems making Milwaukee the standout favourite at 30 to 35% to win it all. Regardless of who lifts the Larry O’Brien Trophy, the tournament will offer ample opportunity to test trading models, or simply have a punt or two, in an extremely interesting sporting context.
In addition to the NBA, the MLB is scheduled to restart in July with the first pitch thrown between the Washington Nationals and the New York Yankees on July 23rd. The American League East has significant strength in depth with the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox combining for approximately 20% of the championship book. The standout favourites in the betting market and among analysts, however, are the LA Dodgers. Their division is probably the weakest in baseball, with no other team expected to go over .500. The Houston Astros should run deep into the postseason, though they are still suffering the fallout of recent scandals. With 70 games per team scheduled for the regular season, there will be ample opportunity to bet into exchanges and Asian bookmakers over the next few months as the MLB season takes shape.
The NHL and NFL seasons are expected to begin in August and September respectively. While the NHL is continuing it’s 2019/20 season from a stable foundation, the NFL is entering a new year after an off-season that saw arguably the greatest player of all time, Tom Brady, switch teams from the New England Patriots to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This, in addition to a number of other offseason moves, including the acquisition of a previously-retired Rob Gronkowski to an already stellar receiving corps, has pushed the Bucs into 15.0 with the bookmakers and 21.0 on the exchanges to lift the Lombardi trophy in February 2021.
We are set for an exceptional summer of sport. Although there may be a lack of crowds over the next few months, there will certainly not be a lack of opportunities to bet on American Sports with Bookielink.
